Deep Rooted Origin of Covid 19
Few days ago, when I was travelling by bus I witnessed a tragic incident at bus stand where foodsellers were repeatedly requesting us to buy something so they can earn some money ( because selling foods and thereby earning something has become very difficult in Covid 19 due to lack of passengers and hesitancy of people to eat outside foods) such issues are not uncommon during pandemic time , we can see so many people who are really struggling to earn to fulfill there minimum basic needs.
Here the question is not of How to handle the situation ? But Why is this situation emerged ?.... So it starts even before December 2019 when China saw her first Covid positive case. Now many of you will think that how the roots of this pandemic are even before the time when world saw first person who is infected by Covid 19 ? Tracing the actual origin of Covid 19 is nearly impossible but the origin is not as simple and sudden as we think but much complex and result of gradual processes related to destruction of environment by humans . Let's made it clear, in 18th century, Industrial Revolution began in Europe which drastically increased demand for various natural resources. But Europe was deficient in various resources. So , many European nation's started to travel to various countries East and West to exploit resources from these countries and also to create them as market for there industrial goods. But at that time they were unaware about consequences of there actions ,they didn't know what is climate change, global warming, pollution and there impact. Without thinking of any adverse consequences they tried to exploit nature as fast as possible. Industrial Revolution did not confined to only Europe, but by twentieth century it propagated all over the world . During this century most countries tried to exploit as many resources as possible . Consequences of these are many like half of the forest area vanished from map of globe, many waterbodies became polluted, many animal and plant species went extinct ,global warming as at high which resulted into climate change and which in turn resulted into uneven droughts ,floods etc. Above all the indirect impact of environmental destruction in general and deforestation in particular was emergence of Zoonotic Diseases ( those diseases which transmit from animals to humans). Generally these diseases spread when humans come in contact of animals and birds in untouched forests, many of these animals carries various deadly viruses and when humans cut forests these viruses infect them and cause fatal diseases. One of the well known Zoonotic disease of early twentieth century was Spanish Flu which spread during first world war in 1918 to 1919 which had avian origin and caused by a strain of H1N1 influenza virus. Spanish Flu killed nearly 50 million people world wide . But still we didn't understand importance of environment and continued to clear forests ,set up industries and increase agriculture.
By 1970s many environmentalist, experts started focusing world's attention towards adverse impact of environmental degradation which resulted into various conferences and protocols to protect environment like United Nations conferences on Human Environment of 1972 focussing on consequences of burning fossil fuels, handling hazardous waste, etc. ; Montreal Protocol of 1987 focussing on destruction of stratospheric ozone ; Earth Summit of Rio de Janeiro in 1992 which gave Agenda 21, a comprehensive plan for sustainable development for next 20 years ; Kyoto protocol of 1998 to control GHGs emissions ; Parris agreement of 2015 which gave 17 Sustainable development goals to achieve by year 2030 . Still having all these agreements and protocols we can see that environmental destruction is going on. Result of this is continuous emergence of deadly diseases like SARS from bat , MERS from camels, Swine flu from pigs , Zica virus from monkey, Nipah from bats and recent one Covid 19 possibly from pangolins or bats.
Other than the spread of diseases there are other consequences of environmental destruction also like rising sea water level which can submerge many big coastal cities all over the world by 2100 , In fact many island nation's like Kiribati , Maldives are started submerging and are on the verge of extinction. These all shows that "Considering Humans as supreme is a misconception the reality is Nature is Supreme". And if humans want to live long they have to take care of Nature .
